WE ALL WANT SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL

23 FEB - 9 MARCH 2024

“I am a painter who explores the theme of human identity in a future modern city. My work is a mixture of abstraction and representation, and it is an exploration of the relationship between form, colour, and deconstruction. I work primarily with acrylic on board, using a process of building up layers and then scraping back to create a textured surface of my paintings. My goal is to create a sense of depth and complexity and to invite the viewer to look beneath the surface of my work to discover the layers that are hidden there. My own experiences travelling the world inspire my paintings. They reflect the struggles, triumphs, and ambiguities that are part of the human experience, and they are an invitation to the viewer to reflect on their own lives and experiences.”
- Josh Lord

Australian Contemporary icon Josh Lord has created a body of work that only emphasises the key ideology he has expressed in paintings past. Using a key doctrine of Cubism, Lord combines abstraction with representation as a means to create the ultimate expression of form. Defining his work as “exploration of the relationship between form, colour, and deconstruction” Lord's layered motifs and fractured juxtaposition of his subjects give his work a pleasantly confronting and gritty vibe.

Lord's exhibition titled We All Want Something Beautiful combines a colourfully chaotic aesthetic with identifiable and confronting text. This text is written in such a manner it draws in its viewer to only discover the high level of attention to detail and multi-faceted layers created by Lord.

In the realm of Australian Contemporary art, Josh Lord stands as a beacon of creative prowess, consistently pushing the boundaries of expression. With a discerning eye for detail and a masterful command of various mediums, he crafts tapestry of different aesthetics whilst using the same method to create them. Yet, Lord's art is not confined to mere representation; it is a conduit for introspection. His creations cause viewers to ponder the intricate dance between tradition and modernity, urging them to contemplate the evolving nature of Australian culture.

Josh Lord's practice, a fusion of Modernist principles and vivid chaos, invites viewers to discover hidden layers, prompting reflection on the evolving dance between tradition and modernity in Australian culture.
